Frequently Asked Questions
What framing issues do I need to be aware of when installing a Total Door system?
Total Door systems can be installed into any opening, provided there is a flat, even, structurally sound surface with or without a frame (such as concrete). You can even retrofit into an existing pairs frame without changes to the frame.
What types of kick plates and cladding are available?
We offer kick and mop plates (wrap around without screws) up to full door height in stainless steel, brass, aluminum and bronze.
What closer should I specify?
We offer a full line of closers for any installation. Total Door is the only door system that can provide a 180-degree, pocketed, double-egress door system. We recommend our concealed closer for interior doors with up to a 135-degree opening.
What electrical door functions are available?
We offer fail-secure, fail-safe, remote-unlatching, and electric-locking panic.
How do I know what fire door rating to specify? Negative or positive pressure label?
Fire door rating requirements vary. Generally, they are determined by local and national fire code requirements.
Can we reduce the pocket depth from 5 1/4"?
Yes, depending on configuration. Pocket depth depends on pull-side hardware, closer requirements and frame detail. For example, a double egress without pull hardware and a closer that does not extend behind the door (i.e. concealed with the arm exposed or pull side mounted) could achieve a pocket depth as low as 2 1/2". A 90-degree with a concealed closer and a wall-mounted track could have a pocket depth as low as 3 1/8".
What lever styles are available?
Our standard suppliers offer a wide selection of levers. We can also work with you to install the lever of your choice from any manufacturer you choose.
What types of applications are suitable for Total Door systems?
Total Door can be used for virtually any door opening in your next project. With our steel and wood doors available in a variety of fire- and non-fire-rated configurations, you have the perfect door system for any opening. Competitive pricing, unequaled quality and a nearly unlimited choice of finishes create a complete solution for all your door system needs.
Why do you call it an “integrated door system”?
All the components for Total Door systems are engineered to work together. This approach improves quality because all hardware is preinstalled in a controlled factory setting. This is not an assortment of traditional pieces assembled off-site claiming to be a door system. In addition, our doors are fire and positive-pressure tested as a system, an important component of UBC 7-2 and 7-4 standards, as well as IBC standards.
Can I shim a Total Door system?
Yes. Total Door will provide you with a unique drop-in shim that will allow you to shim our doors up to 1/4" and still maintain their fire rating. Apply screws to the hinge only to the point of providing a square fit. You can then simply slip our notched shim(s) over the screw to fill the remaining gap as desired before tightening them down. Our continuous hinge also allows you to easily correct for out-of-plumb frames with no requirements for hinge reinforcements or hinge cutouts.
Why does Total Door sell only through limited distributors?
To ensure a quality installation, provide a single source supplier, and to ensure single source responsibility.
How do I service the electromagnetic holder in Total Door systems?
Replacing the magnet is a simple swap-and-replace operation that requires removal of only one screw. The armored wiring is also easy to access, should it ever need service.
What finishes are available?
Total Doors are available in just about any finish imaginable. Your distributor will be happy to work with you on any custom finishes you may be interested in.
Are quick ships available?
Yes. Limitations and additional charges may apply.

Can I use the concealed closer on external applications?
No. The concealed closer was designed for interior applications only, unless the opening is protected.
